ABSTRACT:
The aim of the present study
is to assess the effectiveness of video assisted teaching on new horizons of
ozone therapy among staff nurses. Objectives; 1) Assess the pre-test knowledge
level among staff nurses regarding ozone therapy. 2) Evaluate the effectiveness
of video assisted teaching on ozone therapy in experimental group among staff
nurses at selected hospital Bangalore. 3) Associate the back
ground variables of age, educational qualification, years of working
experience, job title, area of work, overseas experience, previous knowledge
with their knowledge level on ozone therapy. One group pre-test post-test
design was selected for the study. The participants were 30 staff nurses from
Bangalore Hospital, Bangalore. Convenience sampling method was used to select
the sample for study. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data from
the subjects. The obtained data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential
statistics and interpreted in terms of objectives and hypothesis of the study.
The level of significance was set at 0.05 levels. In experimental group,
pre-test mean was 7.26 (SD=2.52) and post-test mean was 16.87 (SD=3.70), with
the t value of 9.99. The obtained t-value is greater than the table value at
0.05 level of significance. Therefore, VAT was effective in improving knowledge
on ozone therapy of staff nurses. CONCLUSION: In the pretest 80% of the
subjects had low level of knowledge, 17% of the subjects had very low level of
knowledge and 3% of of the subjects had average level
of knowledge where as in the post test 63% of the
subjects had good level of knowledge, 20% of the subjects had average level of
knowledge and 17% of the subjects had excellent level of knowledge. The study

INTRODUCTION:
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE
STUDY:
The various forms of oxygen
and ozone therapy have been in use since the late nineteenth century. Ozone
could be used to maintain health while one is not suffering from any ailment.
Ozone is one chemical form or "allotrope" of Oxygen. Molecular Oxygen
consists of two atoms of Oxygen (O+O) forming one di-atomic molecule of Oxygen
(O2). Ozone consists of three atoms of Oxygen, which form the tri-atomic
molecule of Ozone (O3). While it is true that Ozone can be toxic, it is also
just as true that Ozone is essential for life on earth. The high
altitude Ozone layer, scientifically called the Ozonosphere, actually
protects us from the toxic effects of cancer causing high energy ultraviolet
light from the sun. In modern society this layer is being seriously depleted
due to environmental air pollution, with a resultant increase in the incidence
of skin cancers, cataracts, lung diseases and immune deficiency-dysregulation
diseases. The higher energy Ultraviolet sunlight passing through the now
defective high altitude Ozonosphere causes atmospheric
oxygen to react with man-made nitric oxides from fossil fuels and this leads to
the production of toxic levels of Ozone in the air we breathe. Thus, the amount
of Ozone in our air is actually a measure of the overall degree of other
pollutants, but not really a cause of pollution in itself1.
Medical Ozone directly
stimulates oxidative metabolism within cells and organelles inside the cells.
It directly increases the production of energy by increasing cellular ATP
production by up to 40%. It also directly enhances anti-oxidant defenses,
stimulates oxidative de carboxylation, improves blood lipid (cholesterol)
levels, increases blood oxygen levels, improves tissue oxygen extraction,
oxygen utilization and enhances oxidative detoxification of biological and
chemical pollutants. Clinically Medical Ozone therapy has also been shown to
improve cytokine production by immune cells, disinfect
and sterilize infected wounds and gangrene, improved tissue oxygenation due to
the increase in 2, 3 DPG (diphosphglycerate) in red
cells shifting the oxygen-hemoglobin, improve cancer immune surveillance and
help with cancer therapy, improve bone density in osteoporosis, stimulate
cellular immune function, modulate excessive humoral activity in rheumatic and
inflammatory diseases, kill the HIV and other viruses, provide important
ant-inflammatory activity, improve wound healing2,3,4.
Ozone therapy is a
revolutionary medical treatment producing far reaching results in human health
care has now become a reality and is being practiced in the world today. Ozone
therapy was discovered in Germany well over one hundred years ago but did not
come in common use till recently. It is now becoming more popular in various
parts of the world. It is given as complementary or supportive therapy. Medical
Ozone, when properly and responsibly handled for the correct indication, is
safe, practical, effective and economic. Medical ozone is always a mixture of
purest ozone and purest oxygen5.
"Ozone could be used to
maintain health while one is not suffering from any ailment. We are all oxygen
starved while humans have adapted beautifully to 17% oxygen in breathing air
from the initial 30% when we started as oxygen dependent creatures. At present
we are all in jeopardy, oxygen concentrate is going down from 17% to 14% with
increased pollution. We will need protection against this. Ozone is ideal to
overcome the shortage. It compensates for the pollution and provides us with
extra oxygen. It is being a good idea to have ozone treatments periodically,
like ozone bath and rectal ozone infusions. This practice will help maintain
one's health"6 In Ozone therapy, pure ozone is introduced into
the human body. It will help to increase oxygen delivery to the tissues and
organs of the body, to increase blood circulation, to detoxify the body's
systems, and to boost the immune system. Ozone has anti-bacterial, and
anti-viral properties. Ozone has a detoxifying effect on our body. This then
stimulates basic metabolism. Medical ozone can positively influence or even
heal a large number of diseases. Ozone gives more oxygen to Red Blood Cells and
increases their glucose uptake, it makes tissue cell membranes more elastic,
pliable and healthy, it helps cells to intake nutrients efficiently and throw
out waste products quickly, it relaxes blood vessels capillaries and increases
circulation, it primes White Blood Cells and make Immune System more efficient,
it destroys viruses, bacteria, fungi and other germs thus controlling
infections, it helps diseases cells to get rid of toxins and harmful free
radicals and it helps increase energy level in body and has antigenic effect.
Ozone (O3) is activated oxygen
(O2), and in a short period of time the O3 molecule will revert back to oxygen.
During this short half life cycle, the O3 molecule can therefore be utilized
for sanitation and sterilization purposes. Because of its short half-life and
its tremendous oxidizing capabilities, it can be used in situations where
residual chemicals are undesirable. Ozone will work 3000 times quicker and is
2.5 times stronger than chlorine7.
Nurses are health care
providers; they are delivering care to the patient according to their knowledge
level. Ozone therapy is one of the new trends of medical treatment. Most of the
people are not aware of this new treatment modality. “There is nothing as
sacred as knowledge in this world”. Awareness will give regarding ozone therapy
will improve the therapeutic use of ozone therapy in person’s health. Today,
health care providers and people should know about ozone therapy and its
importance because, it doesn’t have any complications or side effects if
properly administered. The contraindications are less and no age
related risks. It doesn’t need any special skills to administer most of
the procedures, except proper training and understanding of the concept. It is
cheap and very effective.
So this ozone therapy
is less cost effective and non-invasive. It is useful for poor patients. Video
assisted teaching regarding benefits of ozone therapy will help to know more
about ozone therapy. It helps to get awareness about the use of this for
treatment for many diseases such as cancer, diabetes, pain, AIDS etc. Also it helps to implement the various techniques of ozone
therapy in our daily living to improve healthy life style.
OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY:
1
Assess
the pre-test knowledge level among staff nurses regarding ozone therapy.
2
Evaluate
the effectiveness of video assisted teaching on ozone therapy in experimental
group among staff nurses at a selected hospital, Bangalore.
3
Associate
the back ground variables of age, educational
qualification, working experience, job title, area of work, overseas experience
and previous knowledge with their knowledge level on ozone therapy.
HYPOTHESES:
H1: There will be a
difference in pre and post-test knowledge level after video assisted teaching
on ozone therapy.
H2: There will be an
association between background variables with the knowledge scores among the
staff nurses.
MATERIALS AND METHODS:
One group pre and post-test
design was adopted. The study was conducted at Bangalore Hospital, Bangalore.
Convenience sampling method was used for the study. The sample size for the
present study was 30 staff nurses. The conceptual frame work adopted for the
study, based on Ludwig Von Bertalanffy’s
(1968) General System Theory. A Structured Questionnaire was used to assess the
pre and post-test knowledge level of staff nurses and it was also developed for
the study to collect the demographic data. The content validity of the tool was
established based on the experts’ opinion. Reliability of the tool was found to
be feasible with the reliability co-efficient of 0.90 by test re-test method.
Permission was obtained from the Bangalore Hospital, Bangalore. Consent of each
subject was obtained before starting the data collection. Assurance was given
to them that the anonymity of each individual would be maintained. Data was collected
from samples and it was analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics.

In the present
study it was observed that in pre-test 5 (17%) of the staffs had very low level
of knowledge, 24 (80%) of the staffs had low level of knowledge, 1 (3%) of the
staffs had average level of knowledge, and none (0%) of them had good and
excellent level of knowledge before administering VAT.
The same figure
also implies that in post-test major subjects 19 (63%) had good level of
knowledge, 6 (20%) had average level of knowledge, 5 (17%) had excellent level
of knowledge and none of them were in low and very low level of knowledge score
after administering VAT.
Fig.2: Clustered Cone Diagram
showing the Mean and SD of pre and post test scores of staff nurses.
From
the above figure 2 we can observe that, in experimental group, pre-test mean
was 7.26 (SD=2.52) and post-test mean was 16.87 (SD=3.70), with the t value of
9.99*for pre and post-test respectively. The obtained t-value was greater than
the table value at 0.05 level of significance. Therefore, VAT was effective in
improving knowledge on ozone therapy of staff nurses.

From the above
table 1, in post-test all the variables of age, educational qualification, work
experience, job title, area of work and overseas experience except previous
knowledge did not have significant association through statistics, so the
research hypothesis (H2) was not accepted for these variables. These
results indicated the effectiveness of video assisted teaching on ozone
therapy.
CONCLUSION:
The results shows
that the mean value of the post test is more than the pretest
knowledge level. The calculated‘t’ value is 9.99*.
This result shows that there is a significant difference between the knowledge
levels on ozone therapy. This highlights the importance of video assisted
teaching about ozone therapy to enhance the staff nurses knowledge to deliver
the safe patient care. The trend of ozone therapy is gradually increasing in
the medical field. Acquiring knowledge on ozone therapy helps to take care of
health care provider’s health as well as it gives public’s awareness.
